Chengala Grama Panchayat: An Overview
Located approximately 5 km east of Kasaragod town, Chengala is one of the most populous and bustling Grama Panchayats in the Kasaragod district of Kerala. It operates under the jurisdiction of the Kasaragod Block Panchayat and is historically, socially, and agriculturally significant to the region.
Formation and Administrative History
Origin & Formation: Initially existing as the Muttathody Village Panchayat, it was officially formed as the Chengala Grama Panchayat in 1970 as part of Kerala's Panchayati Raj system.
Composition: The panchayat is formed by merging four major villages: Chengala, Muttathody, Nekraje, and Padi.
Wards: Following the 2025 delimitation, the panchayat is currently divided into 24 wards.
Governance: Led by the Panchayat President and the governing body, administration is carried out through various Standing Committees (Development, Welfare, Health & Education, and Finance). It features modern, citizen-friendly reforms like e-governance, front-office systems, and time-bound service delivery for registrations (birth, death, marriage), welfare pensions, and building permits.
Economy and Agriculture
Historically an integral part of the rural agricultural system of the Malabar region, the local economy relies heavily on farming.
Major Crops: Rice, coconut, areca nut, black pepper, and sugarcane.
